7 Habits

I have seen a lot of posts about character development (think there might have even been a linky but can't remember:/ ) and wanted to share a book I use.  Actually our entire school uses it (as well as our district).  That's wonderful because we are all using the same "language" to instill wonderful values and build future leaders.  I'm sure most of you have even heard of it but in the case you haven't, I wanted to share.  It's called 7 Habits of Happy Kids by Sean Covey.

7 Habits:
1. Be Proactive
2. Begin with the End in Mind
3. Put First things First
4. Think Win-Win
5. Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the Saw
There are adorable story characters and one short story that teaches a lesson for each habit.  Kids of all ages love this and once the habit is introduced, work hard to "live it".  Our school even purchased posters of each of the habits with their characters for our classrooms.  This is one of my bulletin boards all year.  We focus on one habit a month.  Our A.P. even developed an award program for our entire school where kids are recognized for their "living the habit".  The "teaching" possibilities are endless...It's a great way to instill good values in kids.  Check out the website....I am not doing a very good job explaining this but the website is awesome with alllllll kinds or resources:)

  1. We got to see Sean speak in DC last year- good stuff! I'm using the Synergy habit as a counseling focus this year since we're merging with the school next door and picking up 4th and 5th graders.

    Thanks for sharing! Barbara

  2. I use this book, too! Have you read The Leader in Me? Great book with great ideas about using the 7 Habits in your classroom/school.

By the end of the year, my students were pretty good at using the phrases to talk about what they should do.
